Portrait Photography of Afghan Woman Wins Prestigious Award

The World Press Photo award for 2010 has been awarded to South African photojournalist Jodi Bieber, who captured the image of Ayesha, an Afghan woman whose nose and ears were cut off by members of the Taliban after she tried to flee from an abusive marriage. The portrait photography was featured on the cover of TIME Magazine, and it set off a wide debate over whether the image was too graphic for a mainstream magazine.
Bieber will receive $13,500 for her work, which was chosen over 100,000 other images from around the world. The story has drawn global attention to the plight of Afghan women, as the 18-year-old woman who was married when she was only 12 was brutalised by her own husband and family on the order of Taliban village elders.
