Good Portrait Photography expresses emotional and character from the subject in the photo. Having good camera equipment cannot create this for you, it is up to the photographer to evoke this out of their photography. Begin by focusing on your subject, looking for unique features that will bring out the charachter in the person that you're photographing.
Regarding lens choice, it is better to use a telephoto lens rather than a wide lens, as it flattens and creates a better depth of field for your subject – making them stand out in the photograph. Additionally, use natural sources of lighting rather than the camera flash as this creates more ambient lighting. Direct your subject to get them in the right position, and then shoot away.
